Development of composite thin film with high Piezoelectric
What does this mean to average individual absolutely nothing but to an individual in charge of safety management systems for automobiles, aircraft, power generators, chemical plants means everything. These are the type of places that require high heat resistance sensitive sensors and in order to be highly sensitive it must maintain a high piezoelectric property. But here is the problem, when we increase the heat resistance of a material they usually lose their high piezoelectric property making it difficult or impossible to create a highly accurate sensor for such applications where for example vibration sensors with heat resistance and durability are essential in increasing the safety of an aging power or chemical plants.
Well, group of researchers at National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) and Denso Research Laboratories, Denso Corporation (DENSO) have succeeded to develop an entirely new composite nitrite thin film that has a high piezoelectric and at the same time is highly heat resistance. This new composite is environmentally friendly in addition of being highly heat resistance with high piezoelectric since it is free of harmful substances such as lead. It also can be fabricated as thin film so it can be mass produced using the existing semiconductor manufacturing processes. The institute is still working toward defining the threshold temperature where the new composite is able to maintain its high piezoelectric property. Further to this since it is expected to be used in a high pressure environment its pressure durability characteristic will need to be further investigated.
