January 6, 2009 · Filed Under Green Tech, Trendy Products

Ultra slim LCD TVs supposedly the next big trend in TV market will be one of the most important factors in fueling the growth of LCD and plasma TV. It is expected to reach 14 million units by 2012 according to “DisplaySearch”. This comes at no surprise with expected negative growth of flat panel TV revenue in 2009, first time ever for this market making ultra slim TV a much needed opportunity for differentiation and continued value proposition in flat panel TVs.

JVC’s January 5th announcement of its newly developed super thin LCD is a testimony to the fact that manufacturers of such TVs are taking this opportunity at heart. JVC’s TV display is for 32 inch television displays and it comes at the thinnest and lightest of its kind, weighing only 5 kg at 7mm thickness. According to JVC the display uses approximately 50% less material resources and approximately 10% fewer LCD modules parts compared to their current displays. This is done while maintaining optical intensity and low heat radiation performance offering an energy efficient, high resolution display with high contrast and luminance uniformity and a wide color palette. Being thin making it an ideal choice for places where heavy displays are difficult to install such as public spaces, amusement facilities, outlets, companies, schools and houses according to JVC. JVC labels this new prototype display as “eco-friendly visual lifestyle”. JVC is planning to display this 32 inch LCD TV prototype at Consumer Electronic (CES) event in Las Vegas.
As the LED backlights offers a great promise for this type of displays their commercialization is distance away due to much to be improved wireless links, design of panels, chassis and remote controls. We have to see how JVC overcomes these challenges.
