Topcon Corp. an established company since 1932 with businesses in areas of Positioning, eye care, finetech (Semiconductor inspection equipment, Flat panel display equipment, Optical devices) unveiled a prototype system capable of measuring geospatial data from around a moving vehicle. The IP-S2 is comprised of a GPS antenna, three laser scanners for three-dimensional (3D) measurement and an omni-directional camera as an optional component. The system which is installed on the ceiling of a vehicle is capable of measuring three sets of data one being the positional data which has been gathered through the GPS antenna and the other is 3D point group data from the road and buildings and other structures that surrounds the vehicle and finally the image data. The IP-S2 is capable of measuring road surface profile at the distances of 12 to 13 cm when the vehicle is moving at the speed of 40km per hour. With the help of laser scanner the system gathers more accurate 3D data than current stereo cameras. Also the effects of vibrations and shakes during driving are eliminated with the help of accompanying gyro on IP-S2. The system can measure an area with parameter of 80 meter. With the help of omni-directional camera recording of 360 degrees images would be possible according to Topcon which will be useful addition for application such as “StreetView” which has been provided through Google. The system can be used for measurements in areas off the map as well as for purposes of road surface surveys. Topcon is planning to release the IP-S2 as a product by spring of this year at a price of around 30 million Yen.
