Roof garden design package a cool way to save Energy

March 20, 2009 · Filed Under Coffee Break

Summer is just around the corner especially for those in a congested Tokyo metropolitan area where the temperature during the heat wave can reach over 40 degrees Celsius. Most of us who leave in Tokyo area are familiar with the “HEAT ISLAND” effect which is the result of high concentration of concrete and asphalt and few areas of vegetation and open water. But this is not the only contributing factors to heat island effect, heat from the vehicle exhausts and air conditioning are also contributing factor to this problem. Further to this the disappearance of green belts and lakes and open waters between 1991 and 1996 and replacing them by the concrete jungle nurturing the heat island effect. For past several years however there has been a big shift in mentality of city planner and municipalities and such in making Tokyo a more cooler and enjoyable place to live during the long hot summer which could also be applied to other overly urbanized large cities. One Japanese company has just the solution to this overwhelming problem. TOHO-LEO an established company since 1945 made announced on the company’s do it yourself roof garden package which they call it “Eco filed light” targeted at houses and apartments. This package includes tree planting system and wood decks and it enables for house owner to design his/her own roof garden. The use of this product would result in 40 % cost saving compared to the order made garden plan by eliminating the cost of professional garden planner. It has been said that green roof is effective in reducing use of air conditioner, and also recent gardening boom and the nationwide subsidy bring awareness to have the roof garden even in residential area. This package includes design sheet to do layout and planning of your roof garden and you can select materials for creating the garden. The basic design consists of three kinds of roof tree planting systems, three kinds of flames (soil wall) and two types of wood decks. More selection for roof gardening are available as an option plan such as automatic watering system, a mobile planter and so on. The average deployment period is about 3 days if the roof area is 30 square meter. The price including materials and construction fees is 29500 yen per square meter. For the time being, this package will go on sale only around the Tokyo metropolitan area.

  7. Release of Lightweight Rooftop Gardening system by Kuraray | Japan Technology Information on October 21st, 2009 3:08 pm

[...] Rooftop gardening has become a way of reducing and alleviating the heat island phenomena surrounding Tokyo metropolitan area and at same time participation of the employees of the companies in those buildings in its maintenance is boosting its popularity in other major cities across Japan. The practice is considered to be beneficial in preventing the reflection of sunlight, lessening rainwater drainage, achieving heat insulation that effectively reduces air conditioning costs and at the same time proving an area suitable for rest and relaxation. But one major issue with conventional rooftop gardening systems has been the limitation on the amount of soil used in order to reduce the load on buildings which has resulted in increased soil temperature and in turn a greater tendency towards drying requiring a regular watering and cleaning. In response to over come this issue Kuraray has developed a lightweight, thin-layer rooftop gardening and corrugated plate roof-greening system. The system uses the soil pouch that was recently developed by Kuraray. The system comes with an upgraded heat insulation that effectively reflects sunlight. The soil pouches can then be filed with appropriate amount of soil and placed on rooftops. The surface is a silvered color made of polyethylene mesh and the bottom is a white colored polyester and polyethylene cloth which has been stitched into a pouch shape. The system uses high heat insulation panels with root-damage-resistant sheets which has been manufactured by Sekisui Plastics and is constructed with a flat surface that is placed over corrugated plate roofs. The mat, filter and soil pouch construction is placed above this allowing plant growth. The company is forecasting a 300 million yen sales in the initial year. source Share and Enjoy: [...]
