One-Seg Digital Broadcasts receiver tuner module by Sharp
Today Sharp unveiled a new receiver tuner module for one-seg digital terrestrial broadcast capable of receiving two one-seg programs simultaneously. According to JEITA (Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association) the percentage of mobile handset shipments in Japan with the capability to receive One-seg programs exceeded 85% in December 2008. The one-seg capability is considered as an added value feature for the mobile manufacturers in an effort to differentiate their handset from other manufacturers in a highly competitive market. The VA3A5JZ923 combines two tuner ICs with two OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) demodulation ICs to allow two One-Seg broadcast programs to be received simultaneously. This will provide capability of dual-screen display, or background recording of another program on a different channel. In addition, the VA3A5JZ923 supports diversity techniques to improve reception performance. In diversity mode, when receiving only a single broadcast channel, the signals received from the two tuners are combined to provide the optimal video reception in the mobile environment resulting in a higher reception sensitivity of –112 dBm a 3 dB improvement over its predecessor. Further to this use of Sharp’s proprietary high-density surface mount technology resulted in a compact package design measuring only 9.0 × 9.0 × 1.25 mm. Mass production of the VA3A5JZ923 will commence on March 30th, 2009 with a monthly production of 500,000 units per month.
