Innovative cultivation system for growing high quality Tomato

May 18, 2009 · Filed Under Clean Tech, Green Tech, Trendy Products

Sojitz Corporation made an announcement of the successful growth of high quality tomato with high sugar content through use of the original soil less plant cultivation system capable of minimizing the water consumption. This was done at the experimental farm in United Arab Emirates (UAE). The system was developed by Bio Venture Company Mebiol Inc which is co- financed by a main business group in UAE “Al Ghurair Group” and Waseda University in Japan and Sojitz. Mebiol has been conducting this experimental cultivation system since January 2009.
The mechanism of this cultivation system is in separating the plant from liquid fertilizer by a special film (Hydro- Membrane). This film which is made from gel can absorb only water and nutrients from the liquid fertilizer then releasing them directly to root of the plant. Since the plant is tend to absorb water and nutrition on this film, there is an enormous amount of root growth on the surface of this film. Furthermore, in order to increase the absorption of the liquid fertilizer the plant produces sugar / amino acid in a large quantity resulting in growth of a product with high quality and high sugar content. The Middle Eastern countries are faced with pressing issue of reducing production cost due to current use of cultivation method in producing agricultural products which has been resorted so far by drawing groundwater or desalination of seawater. Up to now the oasis area offered the only secure water for agricultural production making it difficult to expand the cultivated areas. Using this new method will considerably cut down the water usage and at the same time eliminate any needs for a large scale facility like the current Hydroponics making it possible and easy to conduct agricultural production in desert area with scarce water resources. Sojitz is planning to develop this business in other Middle Eastern countries and Africa in the future.
