Development of High performance standalone Drive Recorder IC

Use of drive recorders in recent years has expanded from automobile diagnostics and accident situations to use in support equipment in promoting safer driving and greater efficiency by recording and analyzing operating conditions and driving behavior which has been proven to reduce rate of accident by 10 to 50% and at the same time improving on fuel efficiency by up to 20% helping with CO2 emission in such commercial vehicles as buses, trucks and taxis. But up to now high cost of a commercially available standard driver recorder plus a need for separate PC for such system to use the recorded data has hampered its widespread adoption in consumer vehicles. In response to this need ROHM has developed a monolithic drive recorder IC with high operational performance and standalone capability eliminating any needs for separate PCs. The newly developed driver recorder BU1511KV2 which is designed for drive recorders in both the consumer as well as commercial markets incorporate a camera, SD card, acceleration sensor and GPS module. The BU1511KV2 comes with a built-in ARM9 processor allowing programs to be downloaded serially and processed eliminating any needs for external Flash memory. Furthermore, independent hardware based high performance JPEG/ADPCM CODECs and SD card controllers contributed to reduced processing load making it possible to write audio and video data directly to an SD card eliminating any needs for rendering external buffer RAM resulting in significant cost reduction enabling the BU1511KV2 to operate without a PC. The sampling has already began with unit price of 1,800 yen.
