Development of Five-primary-Color LCD display by Sharp
Market for displays capable of rendering colors to match appearance of naturally occurring surface or designed colors in such fields as industrial design, digital archiving, network-based remote medical care and electronic commerce is gaining in popularity. Based on this need there has been intensifying efforts to come up with a solution in achieving this capability. One such effort has resulted in development of natural vision technology, a technology for rendering color images identical in appearance to real-world objects. It evolved out of an R&D project (October 1999 to March 2006) led by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), an independent administrative agency of the Japanese government. Today Sharp made an announcement on development of five-primary-color display capable of truly reproducing the real surface colors that humans are capable of perceiving. The newly developed display comprises of “Multi-Primary-Color Technology” featuring special image processing circuitry plus a display panel whose pixel structure is based on five-color filters that add the colors C (cyan) and Y (yellow) to the three colors of R (red), G (green), and B (blue). This combination helps with further expansion of color gamut which can be rendered within the color spectrum that humans are capable of discerning with the unaided eye plus it will provide a capability in the display in producing more than 99% of real surface colors. With the newly developed display nearly all real surface colors can be truly rendered, such colors as the color of the sea (emerald blue), brass instruments (golden yellow), and roses (crimson red). Furthermore, the new display provides greater energy saving option due to its ability for efficient use of light energy produced by the backlight. Sharp does not have any immediate plan for commercialization of the new display, as the company is planning to further improve the basic performance of this display in anticipation for its practical application.
