Development of Super resolution ASSP for boosting low-resolution images by NEC

June 1, 2009 · Filed Under Trendy Products

Rapid development of today’s high performance digital audio/visual devices such as digital TV, mobile phones has brought up on the consumer the challenge of viewing low-resolution images on their high-definition electronic products. One example of such deficiency is in viewing the 720 x 480 pixel SD image data on 1920 x 1080 pixel high definition TV resulting in blurred images. The traditional image enhancement technologies in processing low-resolution image data into full HD images requires a large capacity external memory devices as well as high-performance computing engines which would still leave designers of such products with challenges of achieving real-time image processing in order to comes up with vivid moving images. Based on these challenges, NEC Electronics and NEC Central Research Laboratories jointly developed a new technology capable of very high-resolution processing with just one frame of image data. The new super-resolution application-specific standard product (ASSP), the uPD9280GM, which can reduce blurring that usually, occurs when low-resolution images and video are expanded and displayed on 1920 x 1080-pixel high-definition (HD) monitors. The new technology in addition to its capability in boosting standard definition image data is capable of supporting one billion colors (30-bits color depths), which enhances color vividness and accuracy of display.
