Development of wireless LSI technology capable of Video transmission powered by a button battery by NEC
NEC made an announcement on development of wireless technology in achieving about 10 times of speed and power performance over the currently used technology through use of time division demodulation processing of FDM (Frequency Division Multiplexing) signal. NEC has demonstrated the basic operation of this technology by using a prototype of wireless LSI equipped with this newly developed technology. Additionally, NEC has developed a power conversion technology capable of converting part of the radio wave energy received by LSI as a thermal noise during the process of filtering and amplification in LSI which is not used for demodulation into power. Through use of this technology it is possible to improve the transmission performance from 3Mbps to 27 Mbps with energy consumption of 3mW compared to conventional technology such as ZigBee and Bluetooth making it possible to provide a video transmission with a very low power consumption which can be taken care of with a help of only a button battery. The prototyped LSI has demonstrated a 10% improvement on power consumption and future plan for NEC is to improve this to 30% in about 2-3 years time frame through improvement in conversion circuit and adjustment in power conversion part.
