Development of Driver Recorder IC by Epson
Seiko Epson today made an announcement on development of a controller IC designed specifically for drive recorders. We are all familiar with the black box on board the airliners to provide specific data after a crash. The newly developed IC by Epson does exactly that for the vehicles providing ability to record in real time and store data for extended periods of time ensuring the exact time of an accident is recorded without a miss. The new S2S65A30 controller features Source image correction function for lightness/darkness providing sensitivity to light conditions and time of day as well as JPEG decoding for on-site playback capability. Among other features of S2S65A30 controller are large capacity SD card support through SDHC interface, interlaced/progressive converter function allowing connection of two analog cameras, PC connectivity via built-in USB 2.0, interface with acceleration sensors through ADC, event counter for reading of vehicle speed pulses, audio recording capability with I2S and two built-in 30fps VGA JPEG encoders (ISO 10918 compliant). The new S2S65A30 controller as single chip solution has been evolved from the S2S65A00 controller which has been already used in drive recorders. Epson provides software libraries enabling functional optimization of not only the component IC but the entire drive recorder; they are available for use with both µITRON and Linux OS. Sample shipping of the new S2S65A30 controller will begin from August 2009.
