Development of Industry’s largest capacity for a 2.5HDD by Toshiba
Toshiba made an announcement on development of a new series of 5400 RPM 2.5-inch HDDs with industry’s largest 640GB fit for array of computing applications from high performance notebook PCs to high definitions image applications benefiting from low power consumption without any sacrifice in storage capacity. The new HDD has an area density of 817.9Mbit per millimeter square. The new series includes 640GB, 500GB, 320GB, 250GB and 160GB capacity models. Additionally, Toshiba offers a free-fall sensor option to help protect the drive should the host system be dropped.
The MK6465GSX family is also compliant with the European Union’s RoHS directive and halogen free. Toshiba will begin sample shipping to OEMs and distributors this month.

Toshiba’s new MK1634GAL family of 1.8-inch HDDs is equipped with PATA interface, 4200 RPM rotational speed and acoustic reduction functionality making it ideal for audio and video playback applications which demand high storage with a small form factor and at the same time with a quiet operation. The new 160GB model delivers the most improved in energy efficiency a full 24% improvement as defined under the Japanese legal standard. In terms of improve in seek noise on all series, by applying Toshiba’s original advanced acoustic management technology, the new series acoustic noise during seek is at 15db which is a 5dB reduction in comparison to the previous model.
