Development of New Color Active-Matrix TFT Liquid Crystal Display
Toshiba Mobile Display (TMD) made an announcement on development of a new color active-matrix thin-film transistor liquid crystal display module targeted at industrial applications such as test and measurement equipment, medical equipment, mobile computing devices to name a few. The newly developed display is equipped with LED backlight systems featuring an MTBF3 of 100,000 hours. LED backlit display contrary to CCFL (cold-cathode fluorescent lamp) offers a lower electromagnetic noise and lower power consumption and wider adjustable luminance range. Furthermore, the newly developed displays do not require high voltage and high frequency circuits which is required in CCFL backlit displays in order to control luminance resulting in increase level of flexibility in system design specifically in terms of safety, electromagnetic interference (EMI) compensation as well as system architecture. The modules have been designed with a replaceable backlit structure to accommodate product long life requirements. Additionally, TMD has added LED driver circuitry into the electrical interface for the display resulting in simplified design and reduced cost. The screen sizes are available in 5.7-inch, 8.4-inch, 10.4-inch, and 12.1-inch with sampling unit prices ranging from 30,000 yen for 5.7-inch screen size to 70.000 yen for 12.1-inch screen size.
