Development of Wood Based Plastic by Mitsubishi Motor
Mitsubishi Motor Corporation (MMC) made an announcement on development of Wood based plastic made from Cedar wood. The cedar wood that has been used in creating this proprietary plastic resin comes from leftover and waste wood materials in sawmills and furniture factories which until now were burned for thermal energy. The newly developed resin material has been created based on liquid resin wood technology. The creation of this liquid risen is as a result of reaction between wood particles and phenol with a help of acidic catalysts in presence of high temperature where later on is mixed with fillers and a hardener substance to form a hard resin. The final material has a high heat and fire resistance characteristics making it ideal for automobile engine parts and electrical insulation applications which demand high temperature and flame resistance materials. MMC used the newly developed material for its new ashtray cup . The development of this new form of plastic material by MMC is part of the effort by the company in reducing CO2 footprint as well as MMC’s Green Plastic project. This product is the fourth product among the already developed product by MMC as part of the Green Plastic project. The previous products were made based on Bamboo fibers in creation of such items as automobile floor mat. MMC goes one step further by reducing the CO2 lifecycle in this newly developed material by 16 percent in comparison to conventional parts.
