Commercial development of Tuning Fork Crystal for Automotive Application by Epson Toyocom
Epson Toyocom Corporation has made an announcement today on commercial development of FC-13A which is a tuning-fork crystal featuring operating capability at temperature of around 125 degrees Celsius targeted at automotive applications. The output frequency of FC-13A is 32.768 kHz and it only measures 3.2 x 1.5 mm with a maximum thickness of 0.9 mm with operating temperature range of -40 to 125 degrees Celsius. The unit is considered as the core component in sub-clocks and time management function.
The development of miniature 32.768 kHz crystal unit with high temperature tolerance has been spearheaded by market demand for new automobile applications as well as spread of hybrid vehicles and electric cars for such thing as battery monitoring functions. Furthermore, the auto manufacturer require lead-free component for obvious environmental reasons. Epson Toyocom has developed the unit based on company’s QMEMS technology, combining the use of Quartz a crystalline material which possesses excellent frequency stability and high precision and MEMS (micro electronic mechanical system). The QMEMs resulted in reduction of FC-13A’s package to less than one-tenth the volume of its predecessor, the MC-30A. The new tuning-fork crystalline unit will go into volume production in January of 2010.
