Joint development of New Electronic Paper Display Controller by Epson and E Ink

Seiko Epson and E Ink Corporation unveiled the jointly developed EDP Controller IC. The newly developed S1D13522 will provide a high performance as well as space saving solution for E Ink’s Vizplex-enabled electronic paper displays. The Epson and E Ink energy saving screen technology which can be found in most major electronic reader devices has been instrumental in rapid growth of the eReader market helping with expansion of mobile applications such as eBook, eNewspapers, tablet PCs, laptop secondary displays, eNotebooks and eDirctionaries.
The new Epson and E Ink controller IC with the code name of ISIS features a 2Mbytes of embedded memory with a greatly reduced CPU overhead for EPD applications. The new S1D13522 comes with support for direct Touch/Pen drawing interface resulting in multi-regional and concurrent display updates. Furthermore, for the optimal display result the new S1D13522 features Picture-in-Picture, Rotation, Transparency as well as Hardware Cursor functions. The new controller IC comes with Advance Sequencer Engine, Power Management, I2C Thermal Sensor and optional Serial Flash Memory support allowing various application implementations. Additionally, the new controller comes with PMIC I/F interface as well as panel auto ID read. The samples of new S1D13522 controller IC is available now with sample pricing of $20. Production quantity will be available in January 2010 according to the company.
