Development of Continuously Variable Transmission by YAMAHA
Yamaha Motor showcased its new Y.C.A.T. otherwise known for Yamaha Compact Automatic Transmission technology during the 41st Tokyo Motor Show. The newly developed continuously variable transmission (CVT) is ideal for moped type motorcycle of 100 to 125cc class due to its compactness. The CVT units will fit the drive belt which connects the engine drive shaft and rear wheel axel inside the engine assembly resulting in an automatic transmission motorcycle with the same exterior appearance as a moped. The compact deign and its high performance has been achieved through high elasticity, heat resistance resin driven belt as well as an optimum cooling system design. Through application of Y.C.A.T there has been a reduction in distance between the primary (engine-side) and secondary (driven-side) sheaves in about 40% in comparison to the conventional commuter CVT, furthermore, there has been a reduction to belt size by about 60% in length resulting in an overall compact power unit. The entire size of the Y.C.A.T. unit is small enough to fit inside a crankcase no larger than a conventional moped model.
