EUGLENA a Healthy Microalgae with Superb CO2 absorbing Power

December 2, 2009 · Filed Under Clean Tech

A Japanese venture company by the name of Euglena that happens to be the name of a single-celled algae discovered by Leeuwenhoek, a microscope inventor in the 17th century has conducted test in cultivating Euglena using exhaust gas from a thermal power plant. Euglena has been characterized both as an animal and plant, where it moves around like an animal and photosynthesized like a plant. Euglena has a capability of producing and storing rich nutrient from carbon dioxide. It contains well-balanced nutrients that are required for human body such as multi vitamins, fatty acids like DHA and EPA, essential amino acids, plus it contains Paramylon an antioxidant for use in cosmetics and other commodities. Euglena can be used as supplements. Furthermore, due to its inherent characteristics it can capture high concentration of CO2 (up to 40%) gases exhausted from power plants, helping to reduce CO2 emission. The result of the field test by the company which was injecting exhaust gas into a tank exhibited an accelerated growth of euglena by a factor of 20 times in comparison to being only exposed to air. The accelerated growth of euglena in this field test is a step forward in developing a technology to reduce CO2 emission as well as developing bio-diesel fuel using euglena. But, lets not forget euglena’s nutritional value.
