December 4, 2009 · Filed Under Trendy Products

As many countries around the globe now facing the implication of a rapidly aging society, the challenge for these countries still remains in providing to its aging citizens a better quality of life and not only a longer life. Addressing such needs has been instrumental in fueling the successful development of robotic technology and its market expansion. One such company that has been involved in robotic filed is NSK which has been known for its expertise and focus on the supply of components in this field such as bearings, linear guides and ball screws. However, NSK taking a further step in this field by introduction of a new human assistance robot which is able to assist individuals with mobility challenges, guiding them along the way while avoiding obstacles.
This newly developed wheeled robot is capable of helping its user to travel over flat surfaces, inclines as well as slightly uneven surfaces. The robot autonomously selects and follows an obstacle free path by interpreting user’s intentions through subtle changes in force to its handle grips that supports the user. The newly developed robot uses the laser range sensors to detect obstacles ,and as obstacles are detected the robot then calculates the virtual repulsive force according to their distance and direction. Command values from the user are then automatically modified in accordance to the anticipated effect of the repulsive force. The robot can handle inclines and uneven surfaces with its independent two-wheel drive and an active caster mechanism.
