Development of ECO Friendly Spark Plug by DENSO
Fuel efficiency and eco friendliness in automobile or such is achieved through innovative design of various components and choice of new materials in constructing them more so in the engine of the vehicles. One such component which has helped automaker to achieve this goal is spark plug in realizing a more powerful and fuel efficient combustion. One company that has been pursuing this type of development is Denso that recently announced launch of its fuel saving spark plugs which company claims would improve fuel efficiency by 1.2 percent, torque by 1.1 percent while decreasing CO2 footprint by 0.8 percent in comparison to company’s conventional nickel spark plug.
The new spark plug uses a newly developed material, a nickel alloy for the ground and center electrodes. The new material contributes to 40 percent thinner center electrode than conventional nickel spark plugs. Thinner electrodes result in less obstruction of spark growth translating to better ignitability. The new spark plugs poses enough durability to be used in engine combustion chambers where such materials as iridium and platinum have been used to satisfy these conditions, offering a spark plugs at a reasonable price. The new spark plugs are positioned in the middle of high performance spark plugs and conventional nickel spark plugs both in their price and performance. The new spark plugs are available only in Japan.
