Development of New Nanostructure Fabric for Advanced Firefighting Suits
The two basic features in fire fighting suits are their flame and heat barrier properties and comfort to alleviate fatigue and heatstroke. Up to now, combining these at a high level has been technically challenging. In respond to meet this challenge, the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), Teijin Techno Products Limited and Hosokawa Micron Corporation made a joint announcement on development of a new fabric incorporating nanostructure fiber targeted to be used in advanced firefighting suits which are expected to be 40% more effective in preventing burns in comparison to fabric with no nanostructure fiber, and 15% lighter than conventional heat-barrier linings. The nanostructure fiber is made through kneading of nanosized carbon particles into Technora Fiber, a Teijin Techno Products’ high performance para-aramid fiber offering high strength, heat resistance with dimensional stability and chemical resistance. R&D effort toward Development of a Hybrid Car Carrier using Natural Energy
Well, it would be a shame to see all those giant car carriers burning fossil fuel while carrying electric Cars and Hybrid automobiles to oversees. After all, carrying the vehicle itself is part of CO2 emission cycle, even though the actual vehicle is not part of burning the fuel. To address this issue, through an initiative by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, there will be joint R&D effort by Sanyo Electric, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in developing a Hybrid Car Carrier in an effort to reduce CO2 emission form hew ships. Read more

Development of High-strength, High-temperature Resistance Rolled Copper Foil by Hitachi Cable
Current mobile devices such as notebook PCs and smart phones with embedded high performance CPUs and GPUs tend to consume more power than their earlier predecessors, creating a demand for higher energy density lithium-ion batteries. One way to achieve this higher level of energy density is though use of alloys such as silicon alloys, offering a higher charge/discharge capacity in comparison to carbonaceous materials, as the negative electrode active materials applied to the copper foil surface of negative current collectors. However, alloy materials undergo greater volumetric changes that it’s carbonaceous materials during the charge/discharge cycle, resulting in a reduced battery lifespan. The reduced battery life occurs during the repeated charge/discharge cycles which generate stress in the copper foil, eventually causing the copper foil to separate from the negative electrode active material. Overcoming this issue requires the development of a high-strength copper foil capable of withstanding volumetric fluctuations. Based on this need, Hitachi Cable has developed a high strength and high temperature resistance rolled copper foil targeted to be used in next generation lithium-ion secondary batteries, using alloys such as silicon alloys as the negative electrode active material.
