Development of 0603 Size High Performance Chip type Ferrite Beads by MURATA Manufacturing
Murata manufacturing made an announcement on commercialization of 0603 size chip type ferrite beads designed to reduce the undesired noise radiation in electronic equipment. The newly developed chip will result in power saving and extending battery operation time, while significantly reducing DC resistance by approximately 50% through Murata’s own new material as well as new process. This reduction in DC current would mean 50% reduction in power consumption of the component plus it would lengthens battery operation time in mobile devices. The product is targeted to be used in note-PCs, netbooks, MIDs, Mobile phones, Digital still cameras and Portable audio players. The newly chip ferrite beads are inserted into signal lines or power lines as a noise suppression components. When the beads are used in power lines, DC resistance with the component would result in a voltage drop. Normally, large DC resistance would cause a significant voltage drop resulting in reduction in IC operation margin during low battery voltage. Limiting the level of voltage drop is a result of making the resistance small which in turn allows the equipment to run at lower battery voltage. Hence, requiring a small DC resistance components in order to lengthen battery operation time. Among some of the features on this newly developed beads (BLM03AX) is its ultra small size of 0.6×0.3×0.3mm, small impedance variance when it is exposed to environmental stress such as thermal shock and high temperature load, accommodates high currents of 1,000mA and 200mA, impedance characteristics emerging at a low frequency ideal for general signal lines and power lines to name a few. The production has already begun with 50 million unit per month as of December of 2009 with sample price of 5 JPY per unit. The company currently holds 4 pending patents on this product.
