Development of New Compact Coupler Complaint with New TransferJet Wireless System by Hitachi Cable

Sony has developed and promoting TransferJet as a short range and high speed wireless transfer technology. The TransferJet system uses a coupler, a transmitting/receiving antenna based on inductive electric wave, instead of an ordinary antenna using the radiated electromagnetic wave, providing advantages of high speeds wireless transfer capability comparable to UWB (Ultra Wide Band) system, along with simplicity of the NFC (Near-Field Communication ) system which has been adopted by Felica, enabling user to transfer data at a rate of up to 560 Mbps by simply bringing two devices with mounted couplers within 3 cm of each other.
Based on this technology, Hitachi Cable has developed a compact coupler in compliance with TransferJet technology. The compact coupler by Hitachi Cable consists of a radiating element capable of transmitting/receiving radio waves and a thin coaxial cable that supplies power to the radiated element. The coupler is designed to be used in mobile equipment. Making the coupler small to fit into the mobile equipment, reduces the size of the radiating element results in narrowing the frequency band which will in turn reduces the antenna sensitivity. However, based on company’s proprietary design technologies, the ideal shape of the radiating element can be determined ,resulting in performance at 4.20 to 4.76 GHz which is required for data transfer of up to 560 Mbps , while achieving the short range wireless data transfers within 3 cm, plus reducing the coupler’s thickness to 1.6mm. The radiating element in this product can be made from standard components such as double-layer printed circuit board, resulting in easy mass production of the coupler at a low cost. Hitachi Cable is planning for the mass production of the new coupler in March of 2010.
