Development of Millimeter-Wave Intra-connection Wireless Technology by SONY

February 8, 2010 · Filed Under Green Tech, Trendy Products

Sony millimeter wave technologyMillimeter waves are electromagnetic waves with a frequency range of between 30GHz to 300GHz, and wavelength between 1mm to 10mm. With their inherent high frequency, millimeter waves are best suited for ultra high speed data transfer. Their advantage goes further through their ability of transferring data in such high speed with use of very small antennas. With today’s multi-functional electronic equipments there is an increasing amount of internal data transfer which wired connected approach will soon its limit in data capacity, requiring an additional circuitry to accommodate a larger data transfers, however this approach will result in increasingly complex IC packages, intricately printed circuit boards not to mention a larger IC sizes. Millimeter wireless technology offers a promising choice in fulfilling this need. Base on this technology and in the face of coming shortage in data capacity, Sony made an announcement on development of millimeter wave wireless intra-connection technology capable of high speed wireless data transfer inside electronic products such as television sets.
Through use of wireless connections, this technology provide a way for reducing both the cost and form factor of the present IC as well as other components currently used in electronic products, while offering an enhanced reliability in the final product, made possible by replacing all the complicated wiring and internal circuitry. In development of this new technology Sony has employed a highly energy efficient millimeter wave circuits on 40nm CMOS LSIs with an active footprint of just 0.13mm2 including both the transmitter and receiver resulting in high speed data transfer of 11Gbps over a distance of 14mm using antennas with approximate size of only 1mm. The reliability of final product through use of this new technology comes as a result of data transfer that occurs without for any needs in contact, resulting in reliability of movable and detachable parts within the products. Among some of the key feature on this newly developed technology is its synchronized detection capable of aligning the receiver with the transmitted carrier frequency as a mean of providing a sufficient transmission range for intra-connection ,while ensuring a low power consumption operation. Furthermore, by adopting an injection lock system which eliminates Phase Locked Loop (PLL), Sony has successfully managed to synchronize detection over small size circuits with power consumption of 70mW. The transmission distance can be extended to around 50mm through utilization of directivity antennas. The new technology will be presented at ISSCC 2010 in San Francisco, California, from February 7th, 2010.
