Development of Ultra Lightweight Carbon Fiber Fabric by TEIJIN
Here is some good news for all the golfers and Tennis players, your tennis rackets and your golf clubs just got lighter. Well, in order to maintain performance and prevent any cracking during drilling and other machining, a fabric prepreg is usually employed right on top of a prepreg layer for composite product. Therefore, reducing the weight and thickness of such fabrics would contribute to reduction of composite product’s weight and at the same time it will allow the original prepreg layer to be thicker in improving the entire rigidity with no increase in the overall thickness of the final product.
Furthermore, thinly spread yarns provide a less waviness in the fabric resulting in improvement in translation of fiber strength into the composite product. Based on this, Toho Tenax Co., Ltd, member of Teijin Group Company has developed and will start selling a carbon fiber fabric which company claims is less than half the weight of lightest carbon fiber fabrics that are commercially available. The new fabric which has been jointly developed with Sakai Ovex Co., Ltd, and is used for forming prepregs will contribute by further reducing the weight of composite products, making it ideal for high strength, low weight applications such as golf club and tennis racket shafts. The new fabric is made with Toho Tenax’s new carbon fiber yarn which has been designed for making ultra thin fabrics. The new fabric measures only 0.06 mm in thickness thanks to application of Sakai Ovex’s yarn spreading technology. The new fabric weighs only 60g/m2. The Toho Tenax is targeting an annual sale of more than 300,000 m2 by March 2013.
