Development of Generator-Integrated Hybrid Turbocharger Utilizing Exhaust Gas by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has announced the development of hybrid turbocharger to be used for marine propulsion diesel engines using engine exhaust gas. The hybrid turbocharger is also capable of generating electricity. The new MET83MAG hybrid turbocharger is capable of supplying all the necessary electricity needed during normal sea travel. The MET83MAG was commercialized in cooperation of Nippon Yusen KK (NYK Line), Universal Shipbuilding Corporation and Hitachi Zosen Corporation, and it will be installed and tested on a bulk carrier that is planned to go into service in 2011.
The MET83MAG is capable of generating a maximum power output of 754 kW at 9,500 rpm. Furthermore, the new MET83MAG can act as an electric motor for enhancing the performance of the turbocharger during the time when engine speed is slow. The MET83MAG is considered one of the waste heat recovery systems that uses exhaust gas from the engine. It compact design is contributed by its built-in generator.
