Development of Industry’s Thinnest Glass Sheet for Next Generation Displays by Asahi Glass

Asahi Glass Company has made an announcement on development of ultra-thin glass sheet which has been made based on float manufacturing process. Measuring only 0.1mm in thickness, it is the world’s thinnest glass sheet, making it roughly as thin as sheet of paper. The new glass sheet is made of alkali-free glass, which is used as glass substrate for TFT-LCDs is expected to be used in next-generation displays, lighting, touchscreens as well as high-tech application such as medical devices.

The wide range of applications for the newly developed glass sheet is attributed to its flexibility, lightweight, as well as basic characteristics of glass such as transparency, electrical insulation and resistance to heat, chemicals, as well as gases. The new glass sheet will be on display during the Display Week 2011 in Los Angeles, California from May 17.
