Development of New Microcontroller Integrating Advanced Timer Modules and Event Controller for Industrial Automation and Medical and Consumer Applications
Renesas Electronics has announced the development of a new series of microcontrollers (MCU) with enhanced real-time control capabilities. The new 16-bit, RL78 MCU family comes with advanced timer modules, Timer RD, Timer RG, and Timer RJ. The Timer RD consists of two 16-bit timers operating at 64 MHz and a pulse wave modulation (PWNM) function capable of outputting 6 three-phase waveforms with the amplitude specified by the users. The Timer RG is a 16-bit timer module which can automatically measure the counts of a two-phase encoder in phase counting mode. And finally Timer RJ is a 16-bit timer module capable of measuring the pulse width or cycle of pulse output or external pulse input.
In addition to this, the new RL78 MCU family comes with data transfer controller as well as event controller plus an 8-bit DAC used to implement audio playback or to generate high-resolution voltage signals with minimum use of external components. The RL78 MCU also comes with comparator. Samples of the new MCUs are available at various prices depending on memory capacity. The mass production of the new MCU family will commence in December of 2011, with expected monthly volume production of 10,000,000 units in December of 2012.
