Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) has announced the development of new on-board navigation system supporting the vehicle-infrastructure corporative Driving Safety Support System (DSSS) which is planned to be launched by the Japanese National Police Agency in Japan in July. The new navigation system developed by TMC is based on company’s Integrated Safety Management Concept.

The five main feature on this newly developed navigation systems are; “Red light” warning, “Stop sign” warning, “Stationary vehicle ahead” notification, “Blind corner vehicle presence notification as well as “Green light” advance notification helping to reduce traffic congestion and emission, a first implementation in the industry.

Based on this technology, the car navigation system receives traffic infrastructure information from roadside infrared beacons via onboard VICS beacon unit. The new navigation system uses this information along with real-time vehicle information such as speed and accelerator pedal position to generate audio and visual warnings to driver when it is appropriate. The new system is not only enabling information exchange with traffic infrastructure but also among different vehicles on the road.
