Development of 16-bit Microcontrollers with Built-in Power Line Communication Functions
Renesas Electronics has announced the development of a new series of 16-bit microcontrollers (MCUs) with built-in power line communication (PLC) functions providing industry’s highest data transfer speeds in the low frequency band of between 10 kHz to 450 kHz. The newly developed M16C/6S1 MCUs are ideal for applications such as smart meters, lighting fixtures as well as household appliances equipped with data communication capabilities for visualization of energy usage such as electrical power ad quantitative evaluation.
The new MCUs come with 256 KB on-chip flash memory as well as on-chip analog signal processing block (analog front-end). Samples are currently available at US$15 per unit, with mass production to commence in October of 2011.
