Development of Anti-Thrombogenic Materials for use in Wide range of Medical Devices
One of the major issues using medical devices such as catheters is the formation of blood clots when the instrument comes into contact with blood, where the platelets and protein in the blood adhere to the devices and activates to form blood cloths. These blood clots could potentially flow through the blood stream where it can reach brain or lungs triggering severe brain infractions or pulmonary thromboembolism. In order to over come this major issue in medical field, Toray industries has developed an innovative anti-thrombogenic material which possesses high blood compatibility.
The new materials was developed based on Toray’s proprietary functional polymer design technology. The new material developed by Toray significantly improves blood compatibility by localizing functional polymers that simultaneously block the adhesion of platelets to the devices as well as activation of blood coagulation proteins, which are the main causes for blood clot formation.
