A New Dimension to Healthcare Business with Production of Pesticide Free Vegetable
Toshiba Corporation has taken the healthcare business to a new level by announcing the production of pesticide-free, long-life vegetables in a closed plant factory that operates under almost aseptic conditions where germs on vegetable are about 1/1000th of the level typical for vegetable grown in soil. Toshiba has started construction of plant factory at a facility in Yokosuka, Kanagawa prefecture and will start shipping lettuce, baby leaf greens, spinach, mizuno as well as other vegetables in the 2dn quarter of FY 2014. Annual sales are expected to reach at around 300 million yen.
The plant will be equipped with fluorescent lighting with optimized wavelength optimized for vegetable growth, air-conditioning systems for maintaining constant temperature and moisture level, remote monitoring systems to track growth as well as sterilized systems for packing materials. The company uses the same production management system as the semiconductor device production. Toshiba is also considering constructing large scale plant factory outside Japan.
