Development of Ultra-Low Friction Roller Clutch for Fishing Bait Reels by NSK

Here is a bit of news for you fishing enthusiasts. If you have done some fishing whether it was leisurely or professionally, you may very well know that fine control over the lure is an art with a bit of help from the reel ,requiring a reel that delivers a light touch combined with a direct feel plus a minimal play when reeling. To make your fishing experience more enjoyable and rewarding, NSK has developed an ultra-low friction roller clutch for fishing bait reels capable of reducing overrunning friction by 90% comparing to conventional roller clutches in order to enhance reel operation and reel feel.

The new roller capable of ample spring stroke by employing a cantilever shaped spring as well as being optimized for the thickness, width and height of the spring plate resulting in reduction in spring force which creates load resistance during reeling. The reels that come with the new roller clutch ensure reeling with less force with reliable lock against slight tugs on the line from fish bites, ensuring a successful catch. The company is planning for an annual sale of 100 million yen by 2012.

We have seen it in all sorts of shapes and forms but nothing this thin. This newly developed far infrared based hear measures only 1mm thin, developed by a venture company in Japan. The company has successfully managed to make a thin heater based on mixture of paper and carbon fiber. Up to now, the heater’s use has been limited for floor heating, but AIM design Institute uses this technology in manufacturing stylish heating furniture and panel heater. The panel heater is very easy to install and it enables users to set temperature from 25 up to 60 degrees Celsius.
Due to use of far infrared ray, the heart is not suited to warm up the whole room; it is more suitable for warming up part of the body which faces the heater. Other products include chairs, stool and foot heater with a very low power consumption for example using foot heater costs only 0.4 yen/hour. The panel heater is available in two sizes which are 90W and 135W types. Both heaters come with controller and the price tag of 108800 yen and 133000 yen respectively.

Tatami as being part of traditional Japanese culture is going through a though time partly due to shift to more western style of flooring such as rugs, carpets or even wood flooring ,and party due to ongoing difficulties with supply of rice straw, the main ingredient in making tatami. The supply issue has been created due to insufficient straw materials, reduced request because of aging of tatami artisans and need for price reduction with consistent quality. As a result of this, there has been a shift toward tatami mat construction materials that do not use any rice straw. One such company that makes alternative material for tatami construction is Dow Kakoh, where the company uses “STYROFOAM” extruded polystyrene foam boards to match the feel of a straw tatami mats resulting in a lighter tatami mat.
The company in constructing the new tatami mat examined methods to increase the strength of extruded polystyrene foam board as well as combining suitable cushiony and reinforcing materials to help in producing the feel of straw tatami. The new tatami incorporates KURARAY’s steam-jet type non-woven fabrics by using new-and-improved DK Boards designed for tatami mats. The new DK Boards combines the two layer construction, a layer capable of absorbing shock and another in providing rigidity. Now a days Tatami with artificially made materials come in different colors and shapes and I even seen one with embedded LED lights targeted for Japanese type restaurants and drinking places. Being a naturalist, I have a difficulty in replacing that natural and soothing smell of rice straw tatami mat with an artificial one no matter how light it is and how well it has been made. Well, once again you can’t stop progress. The retail price for this new tatami mat is at 18,000 yen per mat. The sale target is set at 1 million tatami mats within 5 years.
This is my second post on this subject. It all started with Mitsubishi’s announcement on development of new plastic resin from the surplus cedar wood. This follows with today’s DOCOMO announcement on development of mobile phone prototype made of surplus wood of trees culled. Well only the exterior body of the phone is made of wood. The new prototype was developed in corporation with Sharp and Olympus Corporation as well as with the collaboration of “more trees”, a reforestation project which is founded by musician Ryuichi Sakamoto and others.

The new prototype which is named TOUCH WOOD in addition of featuring an excellent durability is water, insect and mildew resistance with an attractive shine all to three dimensional compression molding technology which is developed by Olympus Corporation. By the wood content comes from authentic Cypress tree. No artificial coloring and paint has been used in developing the TOUCH WOOD bearing a natural coloring and aroma. The TOUCH WOOD’s GUI is based on the photographic art of Mikiya Takimoto a more trees advocate. The TOUCH WOOD will be show cased both at ITU Telecom World 2009 in Geneva, Switzerland from October 5th to 9th and CEATEC JAPAN 2009 at Makuhari Messe, Chiba prefecture, Japan from October 6th to 10th.
According to the company the new Home Barrier Security solution brings the cost of home security system to one tenth in comparison to the conventional home security system offered by various security companies in Japan. The Home Barrier is consists of window sensors and a receiver which is connected to PC through USB terminal. The window sensor comes with both shock and magnets sensors, when the window sensor detects some abnormality, the sensor sends a message to the receiver and the receiver sends an e-mail to registered mobile e-mail address. It is also possible to control security mode from the mobile phone. The window sensors and the receiver can use a specific frequency which enables a transmission within 100 meter inside house. The user can register up to five different e-mail accounts. The basic unit goes for 27500 yen which includes one main unit, tow window sensors, home barrier software, two magnets and two batteries.
The price tag for this very new and unique USB memory is 1,000,000 yen Taxes are not included. The newly deigned USB which company calls it “MNEMOSYNE” coincides with company’s seventh anniversary. The “MNEMOSYNE” was the memory goddess of ancient Greece. The “MNEMOSYNE” is a cube measuring 72mm on each side consisting of 5 polished silver pieces and one black piece which holds the 16G USB Flash Drive housed in the inner part of the body of “MNEMOSYNE”. It is really a cubic puzzle with the design concept that precious memories must be stored in fashion to be used with care and attention. The user will not be able to get to the memory part of the “MNEMOSYNE” without disassembling it. The biggest attention in designing of “MNEMOSYNE” has been given in emphasizing the value of the memory stored in the USB as a precious collection. Each “MNEMOSYNE” is unique and it differs from one another. The design is certainly breath taking but I think the best memories are the one that stay in your mind for the rest of your life without a USB help free of charge. As I always say, you can’t stop the progress.
