Is nature in rescue of technology or technology in rescue of nature? With a drastic shift in a way the technologist and scientist envision the future technological advancement, it is becoming more prevalent that more and more technology is mimicking the wonders of nature in finding the next generation innovations to untangle the environmental global issues and in improving the quality of life as well as other aspect of it that can substantially change our living standard as we got so much accustomed to it. Invention of Velcro by “de Mestral” in 1948 is a perfect example of such biomimetrics where we can see the technologists’ inspiration for nature. Read more

A new process for catalyst-free production of biodiesel

April 7, 2009 · Filed Under Clean Tech · Comments Off on A new process for catalyst-free production of biodiesel

Currently production of Glycerol as a by-product in the conventional processes for biodiesel fuel (BDF) production is unavoidable. But the current method in BDF production is the alkaline catalyzed method that uses an alkaline catalyst such as caustic soda to accelerate the reaction. BDF is produced through process of extracting fatty acids from oil molecules by way of reacting them with methanol which as a result would convert fatty acids to fatty acid methyl ester otherwise known as FAME. Development of new method in conversion of Biodiesel by-product

March 30, 2009 · Filed Under Green Tech · 1 Comment

Japanese researchers at AIST (Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology) have successfully developed a method in converting the biodiesel by-product during its production. Glycerin is the substance which is produced in a rather large quantity during the production of biobiesel fuel (BDF) which is difficult to get rid of in such a large quantity. As a result of using this new method the produced glycerin can be converted into D-glyceric acid which is a substance in chemical products such as cosmetics, bioplastic, etc. Read more
