Desalinization of saline soils by ice plant (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum)

Here is a new idea that you might consider including in your everyday diet plan. The research group of the Faculty of Agriculture of Saga University in Japan will start conducting desalinization of saline soils in China by using “ice plant (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum)” which has characteristic of absorbing salt through its root. The Ice Plant an annual plan of the Aizoaceae family is native plant of South Africa. Through its natural process, the ice plant absorbs sodium chloride from the root then accumulates the sodium into bladder cells of stem and leaf. On average 1 kg of ice plant is capable of absorbing 14g sodium as result resisting dryness. The ice plant is known as “Barafu” a naturally grown salty vegetable.
