Fujitsu has recently announced the successful 40 Gbps optical fiber transmission using directly-modulated laser which does not require any cooling. This achievement was as a result of using combination of structure that is specifically configured to high-speed operation and a newly developed structure capable of lowering operating current as well as high-temperature operation. The new technology achieves a power consumption that is half that of commercialized 40-Gbps optical transmitters. Read more
