Toyota Motor to Install Vehicle Audible System for Prius

September 1, 2010 · Filed Under Trendy Products · 2 Comments

While majority of consumers expressing their interest for purchasing hybrid or electric vehicles (EV) for their fuel efficiency as well as their environmentally friendly features, one major issue in using such vehicles are their near silent operating engine, to such a level that a committee has been assigned to assess possible countermeasures back in July of last year. The silent operation does not only concern people with hearing or vision disabilities or such, it is a concern that has been raised by everyone. Based on these findings, Toyota Motor Company has incorporated an audible system for Prius, designed to alert pedestrians as well as others audibly to the presence of a quiet vehicle, such as hybrid cars. Development of Thermoelectric Waste Heat Recovery Module by AIST

August 23, 2010 · Filed Under Green Tech · 1 Comment

Efficient use of fossil fuels, such as petroleum and natural gas is in everyone’s agenda, more so for Japan that relies heavily on imports for very much most of its primary energy supplies. This dependency is making Japan as well many other countries with substantial energy dependency to focus on power generation using recovery waste heat as a method in increasing energy utilization efficiency. However, recovering waste heat involves many issues including high recovery costs as well as developing new technology to facilitate the recovery to begin with. One technology that has been gaining in popularity for its capability in waste-heat-recovery power generation is thermoelectric power generation, due to its simple system configuration suitable for downsizing. But use of this technology involves improving the performance of thermoelectric materials to achieve electrical conductivity as high as of a metal and thermal conductivity as low as glass. Based on this researchers at AIST has successfully developed a thermoelectric power generation module that can withstand temperature as high as 300 degrees Celsius. Read more

RENESAS Unveils Two New SoCs for DTVs and STBs for use in Terrestrial Digital Broadcasting

August 5, 2010 · Filed Under Trendy Products · 2 Comments

Renesas has release two new system-on-chip (SoCs) EMMA3TJ to be incorporated in digital television (DTVs) and EMMA3TS to be incorporated in Set-top-boxes (STBs). The two SoCs are targeted specifically for terrestrial digital broadcasting in Japan and South American countries, which includes Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela. Both SoCs have integrated demodulator circuits for ISDB-T terrestrial digital broadcast format that is used in Japan as well as South America, and circuits for the ISDB-S satellite broadcast format used in Japan. Furthermore, the SoCs have on-board decoder circuits for MPEG2 and H.264 video compression protocols, plus they come with peripheral interface circuits, such as USB 2.0 and Ethernet. Read more

Development of New Sensor Technology for High-Speed Detection of Toxin Proteins

August 4, 2010 · Filed Under Clean Tech · 3 Comments

Fujitsu Laboratories and Nagoya University have successfully co-developed a new sensor capable of high-speed detection of toxic proteins. The new sensor uses a combination of artificial antibodies (DNA aptamers) capable of capturing toxic proteins as well as a signal converter which converts the “capturing events” of captured proteins into optical signals. The newly developed sensor is capable of detecting toxic protein 100 times faster in comparison to other available methods. By attaching artificial antibodies which inherently have a strong affinity to bond with the target proteins to the tip of a signal converter, to which fluorescent dye was applied, florescent dye darkened when the proteins bonded with these artificial antibodies.
