NICT 19-core Simultaneous pumped optical amplifierNational Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in collaboration with Furukawa Electric has successfully developed world’s first “19-core simultaneous pumped optical amplifier” for multi-fiber transmission. This next generation technology will increase the transmission capacity per single optical fiber through simultaneous amplification of optical signals which are transmitted through its 19 cores. Through adoption of free-space optical systems using lenses, a single optical amplifier can be used for all cores, increasing efficiency in comparison to conventional single mode fiber technology requiring 19 optical amplifiers. The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in Japan have announced the development of a new speech translation application for smartphones capable of real-time multilingual communication. This machine-based multilingual speech translation technology can be used by multiple users each their terminal devices such as iPhone and Android-based smartphones. This user friendly application covers 21 languages with text input/output and among them 6 languages with speech input/output, performing highly accurate translation for the travel domain. Read more

Group of researchers at National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) has successfully developed the world’s first electronic holography display system with 15 degrees viewing-zone angle and 4cm diagonal display size. The new display system is capable of display color moving holography images, through application of viewing-zone enlargement technique and ultra-high definition display devices with 33 million pixels, making the viewing-zone angle at least 3 times larger and the display area approximately 2 times larger than the conventional systems. The new display system utilizes 3 ultra-high definition LCoSs (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) with 33 million pixels along with its 4cm diagonal display device, where it can reconstruct rightward, forward and leftward light.
