NICT SSPD1National Institute of Information and Communication Technology (NITC) has announced the development of superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SSPDs) exhibiting system detection efficiency (SDE) over 80% at a 1,550 nm wavelength, a 3 fold improvement compared to the previous SSPD. The new improvement has been contributed due to employment of a double-sided cavity structure for enhancing optical absorption and by changing substrate material of the nanowire for improving the current uniformity in the nanowire. This next generation technology will increase the transmission capacity per single optical fiber through simultaneous amplification of optical signals which are transmitted through its 19 cores. Through adoption of free-space optical systems using lenses, a single optical amplifier can be used for all cores, increasing efficiency in comparison to conventional single mode fiber technology requiring 19 optical amplifiers. Gallium Oxide is considered as a promising new semiconductor material ideal for high-breakdown and low-loss power devices due its excellent material properties such as a wide bandgap which can reduce the cost and energy consumption of mass produced devices. Group of Japanese researchers at NICT (National Institute of Information and Communication Technology) with collaboration with Osaka University have succeeded to achieve world’s record of 40 gigabits/s wireless transmission, which is 130 times faster than commercially available Wi-Fi technologies. The new transmission speed is capable of transmitting 32 gigabytes of data just in 6 seconds. The new record beats the previously set record of 27 Gbps. Read more

Achieving High-Speed Optical Communication based on New “Quantum Receiver” Technology

Performance of optical communications is determined by its bit error rate otherwise known as BER, in discriminating the signals “0” and “1”, which consequently can be lowered by eliminating noises in the system. By elimination of these noises face a certain boundary which is known as quantum noise. At the same time the BER can be lowered to a certain limit which is called “the short noise limit”, or SNL. In theory at least a BER can be reduced below the SNL level through simple controlling of quantum noise. However, controlling quantum noise in an optical receiver has sought to be a formidable task. To face this challenge group of researchers at NICT has developed a new quantum receiver which is capable of suppressing the effect of quantum noise through introduction of new technology which controls the particle nature of light (photons), to conventional optical communication which controls the wave characteristic of light.
