Development of High Performance Wheel Bearing for Satellite Attitude Control by NSK
The attitude wheel on a satellite is responsible for accelerating and decelerating an internal rotating mass in form of a flywheel. The generated reaction torque is used to provide attitude control for the satellite. Bearings are considered as one of the main components influencing the performance of the reaction wheel. The bearings in an attitude wheel must satisfy strict requirements to ensure its reliable spin in a long life span of 10 to 15 years during its orbit in the space, while using a small amount of lubricant on the bearing surfaces in a vacuum environment. Furthermore, the bearings must minimize any vibration in order not to adversely affect the observational performance of the satellite. At the same time, the bearings must also withstand the vibration and impact from launch and have a capability of enduring temperature fluctuation while the satellite is in orbit. In response to such strict condition and rugged environment, NSK has developed a high performance wheel bearing for satellite attitude control, the first such product to be developed using homegrown Japanese technology. Development of Shielded Deep Groove Ball Bearings with High Load Capacity by NSK
In order to increase the service life of bearings used under the heavy loads, there is a need to increase bearing load rating. One solution is to increase the size of the bearings but this may not be a practical option given the limited space inside machinery plus avoiding the increased friction loss which will be caused by larger bearings to save energy. Based on this shortcoming NSK has developed a new general purpose, shielded deep groove ball bearings with high load capacity designed to improve maintainability through longer service life while contributing to energy savings through lower torque. The newly developed bearing achieves a 26% greater dynamic load rating in comparison to conventional ISO standard bearings of the same size. The new bearing comes with increased number of balls while using ultra large diameter balls. Read more
Development of World’s Lowest Friction Ball Bearings by NSK
NSK made an announcement on development of ultra low friction sealed clean ball bearings featuring half the friction of the conventional sealed ball bearings. The new ball bearings will be targeted for application in manual transmission (MT) vehicles. The NSK’s sealed bearings are used inside transmission in preventing the ingress of gear dust as well as other contaminants resulting in a longer service life and greater reliability. In the new product, straining force was reduced by 50% through narrowing the seal lip by 10% and length by 70% in comparison to conventional bearings based on computer simulations of the lip shape. Development of Two Sensor Technologies targeted for use in Robots by NSK
NSK made an announcement on development of two kinds of sensor technologies targeted for use in human assisting robots. The two sensor technologies are proximity sensor and a real time conical scan sensor. The proximity sensor was developed for obstacle avoidance in human assisting robots, the sensor is capable of detecting the distance and centered position of a target to the front all in real time by utilizing various linearly arranged sensing elements. The elements simply detect obstacle by reflected light of emitting LED light.
The sensor is capable of obtaining information from various sensing elements with minimum amount of wiring. The sensor’s response time is under 1msec. Read more
