Development of Industry’s First Monolithic Optical Proximity/Illumination Sensor with Touchless Motion Detection Capability by ROHM

November 4, 2009 · Filed Under Trendy Products · 1 Comment

Rohm made an announcement on development of industry’s first single-chip optical proximity/illumination sensor IC featuring touchless motion detection functionality targeted at electronic devices using touch panel such as smart phones and digital cameras. The new optical proximity sensor will be incorporated into these devices in order to turn the touch sensor and LCD panel ON or OFF when the phone is moved away from to and from user’s ear; it is also used for adjusting the brightness of the screen based on the ambient conditions resulting in longer battery life. The single chip BH1771GLC comes with two photodiode, one for detecting visible light and another one for infrared light detection providing the capability of proximity sensing from 1 to 10cm plus brightness from 0 to 65,000 lux. Development of Digital Brightness Sensor IC for Mobile phones by ROHM

October 27, 2009 · Filed Under Green Tech, Trendy Products · 3 Comments

With an increasing demand for higher functionality on mobile phones power saving on these little gadget is becoming a mundane task. One way to the over all power usage of the mobile phone is through minimizing it LCD backlight power usage. In order to achieve such power saving objectives manufacturers of mobile phones implement some sort of brightness control usually via a microcontroller and LED driver along with an ambient light sensor requiring a relatively fast bus speed. As result of this, in response to faster internal transmission speeds in mobile phones to keep up with an increasing pace in addition of new functionality on these devices, ROHM made an announcement on development of industry’s first digital ambient light sensor IC compatible with I2C bus Hs (High-speed) mode. Denso’s newly developed diesel exhaust temperature sensor

May 1, 2009 · Filed Under Green Tech · Comment

In an effort to contribute to cleaner emission and better fuel efficiency Denso corporation has developed a new diesel temperature sensor capable of controlling temperature for diesel particular filter(DPF) resulting in reduction in harmful diesel emissions and improved fuel efficiency. The DPF is the process of recovering the DPF’s filtering capability by burning the particulate matter (PM) which is trapped in the device due to catalytic reaction.
Denso achieved the improved sensor’s temperature accuracy by increasing the length of the probe by almost two fold of conventional product and further extended the sensing tip into the exhaust pipe according to DENSO. Read more

Highly sensitive bendable infrared sensor

April 8, 2009 · Filed Under Green Tech, Trendy Products · Comment

The current infrared sensors in use are pyroelectric type and often use PZT (lead zirconate titanate) an inorganic ferroelectric substance. There are other infrared sensor products that use lithium tantalite (LiTaO3) as a led free alternative but since lithium tantalite is inorganic, it is difficult to bend. There are also Polyvinylidene fluorides (PVDF), organic ferroelectric substance base sensors which can be easily bent but production of such sensors requires a heat treatment process to improve its pyroelectricity resulting in an increase in its production cost.
