Toppan Printing and Kyoto University have jointly developed a special tungsten-based functional paper capable of blocking radiation. The newly developed paper takes advantage of radiation blocking property of tungsten, blocking such radiation as X-rays as well as gamma rays. The new functional paper is very easy to manufacture, where it can be cut, folded, or even can be affixed to other materials such as films. Being lead-free, the new product can be used for both indoor and outdoor applications where it comes into contact with people. One such application is in area of medicine where the walls, doors and curtains of radiology rooms and radiation therapy rooms can be covered with the materials, or it can be used as simple shielding materials in operating theaters as well as medical wards where it is difficult to block radiations. It can also be used as shielding materials for floors that have been contaminated in nuclear medicine laboratories and for transport boxes for radioisotopes. Other practical applications involve in regions affected by the nuclear disaster and recovery work by protecting individuals working in radioactive conditions and simple radiation shielding of contaminated materials and waste. It can also be used as building materials for building new evacuation centers such as gymnasiums in the affected areas. Toppan Printing will make sample shipment of this new paper for the medical as well as décor materials industries.

Development of Super Heat Resistance IC Glass Tag for High Temperature Industrial Application

We all heard of IC Tags used for quality control and inventory and merchandising of some sort but you probably never heard of IC tags that can be embedded into shipbuilding pipes. Well, there are around 6,000 to 10,000 shipbuilding pipes go into constructing a ship, and over half of them are hot-dip galvanized otherwise known as plated for preventing corrosion. The pipes can easily be identified through printing or engraving on the pipe, however physical identification of these pipes after they are plated can be only possible by visually looking at their shapes and dimensions for the sorting process, resulting in human errors and inefficiency in shipbuilding operations. Use of IC tags in this process would provide an efficient way in sorting the pipes, however the guaranteed temperature limit for IC tags was originally 100 degrees Celsius, which make it impossible to be used under conditions for plating where temperatures can reach close to 450 degrees Celsius. In response to technical challenge, Toppan Printing has developed a prototype ultra heat resistance IC glass tag which can withstand a temperature of 450 degree Celsius. Read more

Development of “Emboss Look G2”, a Surface Processing Technology by Toppan Printing

Toppan Printing has announced the development of Emboss Look G2, a surface processing technology using gravure printing plus a specially developed thick, clear varnish by creating the same glossy finish visual effects on a paper cartons as enamel coating. The process does not require embossing using a mold. The new technology makes it possible to create a texture feel on a paper carton that is twice as high as the previous Emboss Look technology. Toppan Printing has developed a printing technology that makes a 3D design possible by giving a sense of depth to a paper carton packages. Through use of this new technology it is possible to produce visual effects such as sense of dept during the printing process. This has been achieved through use of UV varnish to form a microlens on top of fine dot pattern printing and optimizing the alignment of the lens. The new “Emboss Look 3D” technology eliminates any needs for special lens-shaped film, as well as eliminating any needs for separate process, where the 3D design can be produced with the use of regular printing process, a great cost saving. Release of IC Card Marketing Campaign System by TOPPAN Printing

Toppan Printing earlier this month has released a system that company calls it “TOP TOUCH” designed for implementing effective marketing campaign by leveraging usage histories for electronic money and transport cards carried by general users. Toppan’s main business targets are companies in fields of transport, distribution and eating and drinking which issue their own IC cards. Up to now there has been no effort to make use of information such as usage histories stored on IC cards due to lack of methodologies or know-how, making most campaigns aimed at all IC card holders to be conducted regardless of their usage history. The new “TOP TOUCH” IC card campaign system, provide a capability for reading and using the usage histories that has been accumulated on IC cards such as electronic money and IC transport cards. Development of Central Data Management Service for IC Card Issuance by TOPPAN Printing

As old credit cards are being replaced with IC based cards with estimated target of 80% within two years time in Japan, management of IC cards by financial institution in order to minimize damages and loss of these cards due to accidents or other reason is a costly task forcing the financial institution in Japan to divide IC card manufacturing operations between multiple manufacturing companies. In doing so many financial institutions entrust master keys to multiple IC card manufacturers that have data generation environment. At the same time in order to generate the necessary data for IC card manufacturer, a high security encoded. Carrying out the data generation at the financial institution comes with a significant initial investment. In addition to this cost, financial institutions incur additional cost and workload of managing and maintaining multiple master keys from different IC card manufacturer. Based on this need  Toppan Printing launched the sale of TOPPAN ACIS-DG, a central data management service for IC card issuance, with aim to improve management efficiency and reducing costs of managing and maintaining the process through centralized system.
