Ajinomoto and Toray have announced that they will start a joint research for manufacturing bio derived nylon. The nylon will be manufactured from 1,5-pentanediamine (1,5-PD) from the amino acid lysine produced from plant materials by Ajinomoto by way of fermentation technology. Lysine is one of the nine essential amino acids which can not be synthesized by the body and food and other sources are the only mean to obtain it.
The manufacturing process will involve decarbonization of the amino acid lysine through enzyme reaction to make the 1,5-PD, which Toray afterward will polymerize with use of dicarboxylic acid. Read more

Toray industries a leading Japanese manufacturing company in the areas of fibers, textiles, plastics to name a few, made an announcement on the development of new polymer donor material for a thin film solar cells with conversion efficiency of 5.5% the highest efficiency that has been announced up to now. Toray is planning to increase the conversion efficiency of this new material by as much as 7% before its use in a commercialized organic thin film solar cell sometimes by 2015. Read more

Retarder is used to increase the viewing angle of LCD panel and it is normally a thin film that is attached to a glass substrate but due to expansion and contraction of this thin film especially in a large panel there has been a drive to form a retarder inside an LCD panel. But success in formation process using the existing coating material for retarder requires more than six preliminary steps which includes the coating of alignment film, orientation processing and exposure.
