Development of World’s Highest Capacity Tape Media with Over 50 TB Capacity Per Tape Cartridge

Hitachi Maxell and Tokyo Institute of Technology has jointly developed an ultra high capacity tape media with an ultra thin nano-structure magnatic film through use of facing targets sputtering method, allowing a tape cartridge to store over 50 TB of data (an areal recording density of 69.8Mb/mm2), which is 33 times larger than a capacity of the latest LTO Ultrium 5 data. The large capacity tape was made by low-noise laminated soft magnetic underlayers and the magnetic recording film with less than 10nm diameter crystal grains. The nano structured perpendicular magnetic recording film was successfully formed on a 4.5fEm-thick based film through facing targets sputtering method, which was invented by Tokyo Institute of Technology at room temperature without using substrate cooling system. Furthermore, a linear recording density of 531 kbpi and a track pitch of 300 nm without cross-track interference were confirmed by a specially designed tester. Read more
